Vista/Office 2007 Essentials

The information below will apply to faculty and staff after your home department has been migrated to Microsoft Vista and Office 2007.  It also applies to student computing accounts and public computing labs in Maxwell and Eggers Halls after the weekend of June 16th.  (If you are unsure of when these changes are coming to your home department, please contact This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .)

 • On the web: To check email from the web will please visit this new address: https://exchange.syr.edu

 • On your desktop computer: Outlook rules and email signatures will need to be recreated.  You should be able to copy and paste your signature from messages in your Outlook “Sent Items” folder

Files & Drives

 • The list of “recent documents” opened on your computer will be reset.  To open your files and documents you’ll access them directly by opening to the folder that contains your files 

 • If you rely upon “shortcuts” to get to files in your “My Documents” (H Drive) please remove them as they will not point to the correct location on the new system.   You will need to recreate them from your new Vista desktop

 • You will see a few new drive letters in your Computer.  Most notable is the G Drive which will eventually contain your Filer (K) and Classes (M) data.  Please note this new drive can be shared between all Syracuse University schools and departments once they’ve migrated into the central Active Directory system.

Website Editing

 • The name for “FrontPage” (Microsoft’s web editing program) has been changed to “SharePoint Designer”.

 • The list of web site addresses you regularly work on will be reset.  To open your site for editing again please launch SharePoint and go to File> Open Site > enter the site’s full address (such as http://webdev.maxwell.syr.edu/your-department/ or http://student.maxwell.syr.edu/your-username/)

Printing

 • Names of printers will be different.  All printer names will now begin with “max-“ and have a name matching their room location (example max-e062)
