Student Organization Websites

Student organizations extend and enhance the missions of the Maxwell  School.  They are operated by and for students, and yet serve many of  the same ends as classes, symposia, and other official functions of  the School.

The same is true of student-organization websites, which  should help serve an organization's logistical needs (e.g., event  announcement and management) while also hosting some of its  intellectual substance (e.g., online papers and event proceedings).

In addition, all student-organization websites are asked to include  the following:

1) At or near the top of the homepage (sometimes known as the default  or index page), the name of the organization should be provided.  The  name of the organization should include the words "Maxwell School,"  or very nearby a secondary phrase should serve that end (e.g., "a  student organization at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University").   It should be clear to visitors that the site is operated by a student  group, and that the student group is located at this school.

2) At or near the bottom of homepage, in small type, please include  the following attribution: "This website is posted on behalf of the  <organization name>, which is organized by and serves students of the  Maxwell School of Syracuse University.  Content of this site is  authored by those students and supports the mission of the Maxwell  School, but is not directly attributable to the Maxwell School or its  officers."

3) Somewhere on the homepage, please include a link back to the main  Maxwell website at www.maxwell.syr.edu; if possible, incorporate the  Maxwell weblogo as part of this link.

(Right-click and "Save Picture As" to download image.)

4) Student organizations are NOT required to use the colors or other  graphics of the main Maxwell School website; in fact, student  organizations should avoid mimicking the main site so perfectly that  confusion with official Maxwell School content might result. However, organizations that wish to adopt some of the colors and  graphics of the main site, creating a beneficial association, will  find further guidance on the Maxwell Website Design page.

A small committee, centered in the Maxwell School Dean's Office,  reviews student organization websites at least once each year to  assure that content is up-to-date and consistent with each  organization's quasi-official role in the life of the School.  For  more information, e-mail Dana Cooke at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .
